Consumables
When purchasing a till slip printer, find out about the consumables too. These printers generally either use thermal paper or normal paper. Can you get the correct size easily? You purchase a printer once, but your consumables you will need to replenish many times. You don't want to be out of paper! Ink (or ribbons) are also important and need to be readily available. What about parts and servicing? Will you need to send the printer away if there is a problem? Can you get (or do you have) a spare printer in case?
A little more about paper. Laybuys and "Invoices" (as opposed to till slip receipts) can often be printed on A4 or A5 paper in a normal inkjet printer. This is great as they are far cheaper and more readily available than you more specific receipt printers. Some clients of ours actually get A5 paper (half an A4 page) and print onto this in. Utillity has flexible layouts so you can center the document on the "A4" page and this then does not worry the other programs using the printer (reports, or word processors if the computer is used for drafting letters or orders etc.).
I hope that when you choose your POS application you choose Utillity, but if you are not in the clothing or footwear sectors you may well find another package better suited to your market. Now that's honesty!
