Multiple Stores

If you are going to have multiple stores, then there is another factor to consider: Connectivity. Are you going to do a stock lookup in another store? What about receipting laybuys? As soon as you need to connect to another store, you will need some form of connectivity. Historically this has been very expensive, but with ADSL becomming much more affordable the cost on having your own VPN (Virtual Private Network - your network over the internet) has become less inhibiting.

Having a VPN (or simply ADSL connectivity) can also boost productivity in other ways. Applications such as SKYPE can cut your phone bills dramatically, you can print to printers in other stores - thereby saving faxing. Email and other benefits are better known.

On the net

Being on the net has its rewards, but it also has its issues too. As a general rule you need to have some serious plan in place for things such as Antivirus updates, Windows (or operating system) updates, a firewall etc. You must realise that your computers are on the internet and any "14 year old hacker" can get to them if they are not secure. Make sure, or make another plan.

I hope that when you choose your POS application you choose Utillity, but if you are not in the clothing or footwear sectors you may well find another package better suited to your market. Now that's honesty!
